RIO — A sétima temporada de The Walking Dead terminou neste domingo com a morte, traição e uma homenagem nos créditos: "Em memória de Bernie Wrightson — mas quem é ele?

Wrightson foi um artista americano mais conhecido como cocriador do personagem Monstro do Pântano. Ele começou a carreira como ilustrador nos anos 1960 antes de começar a trabalhar com quadrinhos. Também fez capas de livros de Stephen King e artes conceituais para vários filmes, entre os quais Os caça-fantasmas, Galaxy Quest e Homem-aranha.

Enfrentando um câncer, se aposentou em janeiro deste ano e acabou morrendo de 18 de março, aos 68 anos. O trabalho de Wrightson se tornou uma grande influência no gênero do terror — e entre a equipe de The Walking Dead. Na temporada passada, o produtor executivo Greg Nicotero dedicou um zumbi a ele: "Algo que eu queria fazer no programa há algum tempo, levar o visual ainda mais longe... remover a área sob as costelas e o nariz e assim Scott colocou o zumbi 'Wrightson' no roteiro como um tributo ao gênio Bernie Wrightson."

31 JAN. / 2017 - Infelizmente, o co-criador do Monstro do Pântano, Bernie Wrightson, se aposentou dos quadrinhos por problemas de saúde. O veterano artista de horror criou o Monstro do Pântano ao lado de Lein Wein. A notícia foi dada por Wrightson e sua esposa Liz pelo Facebook.

Segundo a postagem, o desenhista está relativamente com boa saúde, mas ele não tem mais condições de desenhar, apenas assinar seu nome.

Wrightson é mais lembrado por seu trabalho em Monstro do Pântano, mas o desenhista também trabalhou com outros heróis como o Batman e com o mestre do terror Stephen King. Ele também fez artes para filmes de Hollywood. O último grande quadrinho do artista tinha sido uma série chamada Frankenstein Alive, Alive! pela IDW.

30 jan. / 2017 - About an hour ago, legendary comic artist Bernie Wrightson announced his retirement due to needing to focus on his health. Bernie has worked for the majority of comic publisher over his career but may be best known for his time on Swamp Thing or his work on Frankenstein. His wife Liz posted to his facebook page the following message:

Dear Fans and Friends,

I apologize for our silence for the past few months. Last November Bernie began falling again, and having obvious problems with perception. He had to undergo yet another brain surgery to relieve bleeding, and then spend several weeks undergoing in-patient rehabilitation. Unfortunately, it appears that he has lasting damage: he has extremely limited function on his left side, and is unable to walk or reliably use his left hand, among other limitations.

We have had to come to the sad conclusion that he is now effectively retired: he will produce no new art, and he is unable to attend conventions. Should this situation change I will happily announce it here.

He can still sign his name (in fact he was signing Kickstarter prints in the hospital!), and is otherwise pretty healthy and has good cognition. We expect to continue releasing signed prints, and offering occasional pieces of art for sale from the collection that remains. We both thank all of you for your continuing support and good wishes!

Bernie is an incredible artist and an incredible person. He is one of those creators in comics that is even better than you could imaging in person. His talent has inspired thousands of other creators and he has left an permanent mark in this industry. We here at Bleeding Cool, and I personally, wish him all the best.
