11 nov. / 2019 – Uma série de fotos em preto e branco da época da primeira turnê de shows dos Rolling Stones, em 1963, será exposta no leste de Londres neste mês.

As imagens, feitas em um estúdio de gravação londrino e em uma apresentação em Cardiff, no País de Gales, ficaram guardadas sob a cama do fotógrafo Gus Coral durante mais de 50 anos até ele decidir resgatá-las.

As fotos capturam o começo humilde de uma banda que se tornaria um nome conhecido em todo o mundo, e incluem uma foto dos músicos juntando dinheiro para uma corrida de táxi e uma pequena plateia esperando debaixo de chuva antes de eles e outros grupos da turnê subirem no palco galês.

Coral, que tinha 26 anos quando tirou as fotos, lembra de ter pensado na época que a banda iria longe.

"Obviamente... eu não sabia que eles durariam todos esses anos e seriam tão especiais, mas sabia que eram especiais", disse.

"Estávamos saindo da Segunda Guerra Mundial e havia certas pessoas que eram meio que líderes na descoberta de um novo caminho, uma nova cultura para ir adiante. E eles eram um deles."

Ao observar Mick Jagger e os colegas de banda Keith Richards, Bill Wyman, Charlie Watts e Brian Jones antes de gravarem "I Wanna Be Your Man" em Londres, Coral ficou impressionado com seu profissionalismo.

"(As pessoas) querem aquela coisa 'destruímos o hotel e tínhamos uma fila de garotas de 16 anos esperando na porta'", disse. "Não era nada assim. Era um homem sério fazendo um trabalho sério e fechando um contrato de gravação."

Coral e alguns amigos foram de carro a Cardiff para gravar o show e tiveram acesso total.

A exposição Black & White Blues - Where it all Began ficará no The Curtain entre 18 de novembro e 2 de dezembro.

11 nov. / 2019 – No último sábado, 9, o site Daily Mail publicou uma longa e detalhada entrevista com Ronnie Wood, guitarrista dos Rolling Stones, na qual o músico falou sobre os anos de abuso de drogas, "sobrevivência do mais adaptado", a inesgotável vitalidade que ainda impulsiona a banda e até relembrou do dia em que recusou entrar para o Led Zeppelin.

"Não consigo acreditar que ainda estou aqui", admitiu. "Cocaína, heroína, álcool, freebase [fumar cocaína pura], eu experimentei tudo, mas o cigarro é o mais difícil de parar. Eu fui até o precipício e olhei lá para baixo, mas nunca me deixei cair. Até nos meus dias mais insanos eu sabia quando parar."

Ele disse também que sempre se sentiu inclinado a buscar loucuras: "Eu sempre arrisquei muito, e fazer isso me dava prazer. [...] No começo era álcool, depois drogas. Não me arrependo de nada." E explicou o motivo de não se arrepender: "Teve um efeito na música – tudo fazia parte do som. Era a jornada. Você precisava atravessar isso para chegar lá."

Wood também falou sobre os procedimentos médicos pelos quais todos os integrantes dos Rolling Stones já passaram.

"Charli [Watts] teve câncer de garganta [em 2004], Keith [Richards] fez cirurgia no cérebro [em 2006], eu com os meus pulmões [ele removeu lesões cancerígenas em 2017], e aí foi a vez do coração do Mick [Jagger, que precisou fazer uma cirurgia emergencial este ano]", e completou com confiança: "Nada pode nos parar. Sobrevivência do mais adaptado. Não vamos parar."

E surpreendentemente, ele até se lembrou de quando recusou o convite para se tornar um dos integrantes do Led Zeppelin. A resposta dele à convocação? "Não posso me juntar a esse bando de fazendeiros".

Neil Young has outlined an ambitious plan to release an enormous cache of unreleased music onto his Neil Young Archives website in 2020.

11 nov. / 2019 – A fan recently reached out to Neil Young about his 76-year-old Uncle Eddie, expressing concern that Eddie won’t live long enough to hear all of Young’s archival releases. “That really bums me out,” Young wrote on his archives site, then outlined a potential plan to release an enormous cache of unreleased material to paid subscribers of the Archives long before it’s made available to the general public.

“I have been talking with our team about releasing all [the albums] here at NYA exclusively in 2020,” he writes. “Initially, these albums would not be released as CDs or vinyl. Eventually they may, but they would be here at NYA exclusively in the meantime and there are quite a few of them.”

The current system involves the release of an archival disc like Tuscaloosa, Songs for Judy and Roxy: Tonight’s The Night Live a handful of times per year — unless a new album gets in the way. They hit his Neil Young Archives website at the same time that they are released to streaming platforms and as physical albums.

The unreleased material Young is talking about here includes numerous albums like 1975’s Homegrown, 1976’s Chrome Dreams, 1977’s Oceanside-Countryside, 1982’s Island in the Sun and 2000’s Toast. There are also several live albums, including 1976’s Odeon Budokan, 1978’s Boarding House, 1986’s Live in a Rusted Out Garage and 2012’s Alchemy. He has also assembled a collection of Danny Whitten-era Crazy Horse recordings he’s calling Early Daze. (The above list is probably just scratching the surface, since he records every concert, soundcheck and studio session — and has for decades.)

Access to the Neil Young Archives currently costs $1.99 per month or $19.99 per year. If he goes through with his big plan, that would change. “This would create a new tier at NYA, possibly including On-Demand videos, movies and records, plus NYA’s exclusive content for Uncle Eddie’s tier (as yet unnamed),” Young writes. “Your subscription price will be higher for this tier. More changes will be added as we discuss this.”

Young continues: “Eventually, over time these NYA exclusive records and films will be released to the public as hard goods and digital files with finished covers and art, but many will have already been available here at NYA long before they become hard goods released to the public by Shakey Pictures or NYA Records.”

One potential issue is the possibility of the material leaking out to the public once it’s made available on the NYA. “Of course we will try to make sure they do not escape into the Internet while they are exclusive to the NYA,” Young writes. “If we can figure this out we will release many of them in 2020. That’s what we are thinking. We will keep you posted when we reach a decision…It’s a race against time.”

11 nov. / 2019 – RIO – Um evento no Rio discutiu, nesta segunda-feira (11), a cultura e a liberdade de expressão. O evento foi promovido pela Associação de Produtores de Teatro (APTR), no Galpão Gamboa, na Zona Portuária.

"É incrível, em novembro de 2019, nós — produtores, artistas e intelectuais — estarmos reunidos para falarmos sobre liberdade de expressão e democracia", desabafou o organizador do evento Eduardo Barata, presidente da associação.

O diplomata e imortal da Academia Brasileira de Letras (ABL) Sérgio Rouanet também criticou o que chama de censura.

"A gente tem um pouco de vergonha, em pleno século 21, de ter que defender a razão e a cultura. Esperamos que seja uma curta escaramuça contra o obscurantismo. Nós temos que acreditar em muitas coisas, entre elas, no progresso da razão", disse.

Mudança na secretaria
O evento ocorre após mais uma mudança na Secretaria de Cultura. No último dia 7, o presidente Jair Bolsonaro transferiu a Secretaria Especial de Cultura do Ministério da Cidadania para o Ministério do Turismo, comandada pelo ministro Marcelo Álvaro Antônio.

Suplicy parafraseou a ministra do Supremo Tribunal Federal (STF) Carmen Lúcia e afirmou que "censura a gente não debate, a gente combate".

O presidente da Câmara dos deputados, Rodrigo Maia (DEM), participaria do evento. Ele cancelou a presença por conta da forte chuva no Rio, mas enviou um vídeo que foi exibido na abertura.

"Tenho certeza que, aqui na Câmara (dos Deputados), junto com deputados e deputadas estaremos sempre lutado pelo fortalecimento dos investimentos na área de cultura, com a certeza da importância que tem o tema. E, claro, o investimento na área de cultura é fundamental somado a nossa liberdade de expressão, que é um país que vai crescer, que quer ser próespero e a democracia precisa garantir isso para a nossa população", disse Maia.

Espetáculo cancelado é encenado
O evento manifesta a preocupação com o cerceamento de liberdade e exibiu um trecho da peça Caranguejo Overdrive, que teve apresentações censuradas, segundo os organizadores, no Centro Cultural Banco do Brasil (CCBB).

A peça havia sido convidada a participar da mostra comemorativa pelos 30 anos do CCBB do Rio, mas a apresentação foi cancelada a 10 dias do evento.

11 nov. / 2019 – Despite living in America for most of his life, Neil Young is still only a Canadian citizen. That’s not for a lack of effort, however, as the 73-year-old rocker has been trying to become a dual US citizen for some time now. The delay is apparently the result of Young’s history of marijuana use, which may be the most stuck-up American way to officially welcome him as an American.

Most of Young’s life at this point has been spent living in the US, paying taxes in the US, and spending time with family in the US. With the upcoming presidential election drawing near, he’s been trying to get his American citizenship approved once and for all so that he can vote here, too (via Stereogum).

As far as the application process goes, Young has completed the whole thing. He filled out the forms, passed his citizenship test, and was scheduled to take the oath this past Tuesday. That’s when he hit a road bump. Young was informed there’s been a delay in the process because his use of marijuana may indicate a lack of GMC, or “Good Moral Character” — an apparently real thing in the US citizenship requirements thanks to Attorney General Jeff Sessions.

To prove he has good moral character, Young has to take another test to show he’s a good guy with weed. “I sincerely hope I have exhibited good moral character and will be able to vote my conscience on Donald J. Trump and his fellow American candidates, (as yet un-named),” he said. “I will keep you posted, but I don’t think I will be able to remain parked here during the proceedings.”

It’s pretty wild to think a musician as legendary and engrained in American pop culture as Neil Young is having this much trouble trying to become an American citizen. Doubly so because the thing holding him up is actually legal in a number of states. Maybe the people handling his documents just need to give Neil Young and Crazy Horse’s first new album in seven years, Colorado, a listen to realize he’d be a valuable official citizen, regardless of how red his eyes are.

11 nov. / 2019 – RIO — O cantor canadense Neil Young está enfrentando um atraso em seu pedido de cidadania americana depois de responder a uma pergunta sobre seu uso de maconha. O compositor disse em uma carta aos fãs, postada em seu site, que passou no teste de cidadania, mas que foi chamado para fazer outra avaliação "devido ao meu uso de marijuana ".

"Quero ter dupla cidadania e votar", explicou Young, que é cidadão canadense, no post de 8 de novembro intitulado "Tive muito sucesso na minha vida".

Segundo publicou o "The Guardian", o serviço de cidadania e imigração dos EUA adicionou uma política em abril de 2019 que diz que um candidato envolvido em atividades relacionadas à maconha pode não ser aceito como cidadão americano.

"Quando recentemente solicitei a cidadania americana, passei no teste. Foi uma conversa em que me fizeram muitas perguntas. Respondi-as com sinceridade e passei", escreveu Young. "No entanto, me disseram que devo fazer outro teste, devido ao uso de maconha e à maneira como algumas pessoas que fumam parecem um problema".

Young vive em Los Angeles desde a década de 1960. Em outubro, ele disse ao "LA Times": "Eu ainda sou canadense; não há nada que possa tirar isso de mim. Mas eu moro aqui, pago impostos aqui, minha linda família está aqui — são todos americanos, então quero registrar minha opinião".

Na nota publicada em seu site ele afirma que irá manter os fãs atualizados sobre seu processo de cidadania.

Robert Freeman, the photographer behind some of the most famous early images of the Beatles, including the cover shots for the albums A Hard Day’s Night, Help! and Rubber Soul, has died aged 82.

Paul McCartney paid tribute to Freeman by posting a lengthy online tribute, praising him as “one of our favourite photographers who came up with some of our most iconic album covers”. He added: “Besides being a great professional he was imaginative and a true original thinker.”

Freeman also worked on the final sequences of the first two Beatles films, A Hard Day’s Night and Help!, and took the cover photos for the albums With The Beatles and Beatles For Sale.

McCartney, 77, went on to detail how Freeman had created some of the best-loved pictures of the group: “People often think that the cover shot for Meet The Beatles! [US title of With The Beatles] of our foreheads in half shadow was a carefully arranged studio shot,” he said.

“In fact, it was taken quite quickly by Robert in the corridor of a hotel we were staying in where natural light came from the windows at the end of the corridor. I think it took no more than half an hour to accomplish.”

The rows of headshots of McCartney, Ringo Starr, George Harrison and John Lennon that appear like film frames on the front of A Hard Day’s Night were taken in Freeman’s London studio. He asked them to make new facial expressions for each photo.

This weekend, McCartney also described how Freeman came up with the distorted Rubber Soul cover portrait, which appears below the title logo designed by Charles Front.

“Bob’s normal practice was to use a slide projector and project the photos he’d taken on to a piece of white cardboard, which was exactly album sized, thus giving us an accurate idea of how the finished product would look,” wrote McCartney.

“During his viewing session the card, which had been propped up on a small table, fell backwards giving the photograph a ‘stretched’ look. Instead of simply putting the card upright again we became excited at the idea of this new version of his photograph.

“He assured us that it was possible to print it this way and because the album was titled Rubber Soul we felt that the image fitted perfectly.”

Freeman, born in London and educated at Cambridge, began his photographic career at the Sunday Times and first made an impact with black and white studies of jazz musicians, including the saxophonist John Coltrane. The Beatles’ manager, Brian Epstein, first commissioned Freeman to take a group portrait of the band in 1963.

Freeman later worked as a director on the cult Swinging London film The Touchables and was also the photographer for the first Pirelli calendar.

He suffered a severe stroke in 2014 and his family paid for his care and the preservation of his archive by selling a copy of one of his John Lennon portraits.

Bidding farewell, McCartney wrote: “I will miss this wonderful man, but will always cherish the fond memories I have of him. Thanks Bob. Love Paul.”

11 nov. / 2019 – O ex-Beatle Paul McCartney prestou homenagem a Robert Freeman, que morreu neste sábado aos 82 anos, um dos fotógrafos favoritos do lendário grupo britânico e que fez várias capas de seus álbuns mais icônicos.

"Era um de nossos fotógrafos favoritos durante os anos dos Beatles, que fez várias de nossas capas", escreveu McCartney em seu site.

"Ele era um ótimo profissional, mas também muito criativo e um verdadeiro pensador original", acrescentou.

Robert Freeman, nascido em 5 de dezembro de 1936, fez a capa de With the Beatles (1963), o segundo álbum dos "Fab Four", mas também de Beatles for Sale (1964), Help! (1965) e Rubber Soul (1965).

Outro ex-Beatle, Ringo Starr, também prestou homenagem ao fotógrafo no Twitter. "Que Deus abençoe Robert Freeman, paz e amor para toda a sua família".

A conta oficial dos Beatles no Twitter, que anunciou a morte na sexta-feira (8), não informou a causa.

Freeman, que começou sua carreira no jornal britânico The Sunday Times, também foi o fotógrafo do primeiro calendário Pirelli em 1964, no qual aparecem jovens nus.
